Tree Care vs Tree Lopping

Typically people in Sydney refer to the work on trees as Tree Lopping. Although the previous statement is partially true it is more a term that we within the industry refer to as tree removal or when an unqualified tree cutter goes about "trying" prune the tree, but incorrectly does so. The proper term would be to call it Tree Care and or Tree Pruning. Tree care/Tree Pruning is a specialised service that Arborists can offer for your tree where it is needed. So what are the benefits of tree care compared to tree lopping in Sydney?

Tree lopping is bad for the tree, whether is be removal or lopping off the branches. Tree lopping can result in: Unsafe & dangerous trees, over exposure to the sun, lower property value, ugly-unsightly trees that are bad for aesthetic value.

Tree care and pruning is good for the tree. When we use these practices, we must consider are we doing something to the tree or something for the tree. Some examples of doing something to the tree can include: Crown raising, where we remove the lower branches of the tree for clearance and aesthetics. Doing something for the tree: Dead wooding, where we remove all of the old dead branches from the tree, allowing the tree to seal off the wound.

Although there are different ways and methods of doing things to and for the tree, with a qualified arborist performing the tree work, you can lessen the result of a negative impact on that tree - qualified tree pruning.

Council Permits (Sydney) - Tree Preservation Order

In the Sydney Metropolitan area all trees are protected under a blanket Tree Preservation Order that varies from council to council. They all point out and state that in general no tree is to be touched (have work done) prior to seeking council permission.

To apply for council permission you can either:
Call your council - Ask for their Tree Preservation Order (TPO) to be sent to you.
Take a visit to your local council chambers
Or Goto your council's website - Download and print off your own form.
